There’s a particular kind of love story that doesn’t need a hundred guests, a dance floor, or a seating chart to feel like the biggest day of someone’s life. Cara and Michael are proof of that. They came to Roan Mountain wanting something intimate, romantic, and quiet. Something that was just the two of them, an officiant, their dog, and me tucked off to the side with my camera. What they got instead was one of the most memorable elopements I’ve photographed, rain and all.
If you’re considering eloping at Roan Mountain yourself, I’m walking through their whole day here from what we planned for, what we didn’t, and everything I’d tell a couple who wants to do the same.

Why Roan Mountain
The Carver’s Gap trail at Roan Mountain sits right on the North Carolina / Tennessee border and offers something hard to find anywhere else in the region: sweeping, 360-degree views at the summit without a grueling hike to get there. For a couple like Cara and Michael, who wanted their ceremony to feel like a reflection of their love for the mountains, it was the obvious choice. There’s a stillness up there. No crowds, no noise, just wind and wide-open sky. The symbolism of two coming together as one. It was so simply and naturally beautiful.
We also happened to be there right around rhododendron bloom season, which meant the trail up wasn’t just scenic, it was covered in color that only shows up at that elevation, for a few short weeks a year. Partway up the trail, Cara mentioned how much she loved the rhododendrons blooming around us. I couldn’t resist stopping for a few extra photos right there on the trail. I didn’t think much of it in the moment, but looking back at those images now, they’ve become some of my favorite from the whole day. Not only was it a special reason they chose this time of year, but a beautiful reminder that you’ll only see blooms like that at that elevation, during that narrow window in early summer that’s now a part of their documented memories.

Planning Around the Weather
We knew going in that there was a real chance of rain. Rather than treat that as a problem to avoid, Cara, Michael, and I embraced it and planned for it. They packed:
- Their wedding attire, carried up in a bag to change into at the top
- Clear umbrellas, so nothing would block the shot if the sky opened up
- Their handwritten vows
- A bottle of champagne to pop after the ceremony
- Headlamps, since we were doing their vows at sunset and knew we’d be hiking back down in the dark
- And I brought my changing tent so they could privately change into their attire at the summit.
This is genuinely one of the best things you can do if you’re planning a mountain elopement: pack for the weather you’re hoping to avoid, not just the weather you want. It’s the difference between a rainstorm ruining your day and a rainstorm becoming part of the story.

The Ceremony
We reached the summit with just enough daylight left to change into their wedding clothes using my pop-up changing tent, get into place, and begin. It was just the two of them and their officiant and me – no audience, no distractions. Their vows were personal and unscripted in the best way, and there wasn’t a dry eye between the four of us standing up there. It reminded me of a movie. Two people standing before each other among an endless mountain range, confessing and promising their love to one another as the storm clouds roll in over the ridgeline just in time. Cara’s veil blowing so effortlessly in the wind, and Michael’s tenderness in his words as he spoke to her. Pure, unscripted, romantic magic.

Racing the Rain
We hurried back down the trail as the sky let go. It was pouring by the time we were halfway down, and not the soft, romantic drizzle you see in movies, but a real, soaking mountain rain. Somewhere in the middle of that chaos, we stopped just long enough for one photo: the two of them dancing together in the parking lot right before jumping into their truck – drenched and in love.
The photo is not a technically perfect photograph. It was rushed, the light was gone, and we were all more focused on not getting the marriage license and the cameras wet than getting the composition right. But it’s become one of the most meaningful images from their day, because it’s real. That’s what I love about elopements – you don’t get a version of the day that’s been smoothed over. You get the actual thing, headlamps, rain, mud, and all.

Sample Timeline for a Roan Mountain Sunset Elopement
If you’re planning your own elopement here, timing matters more than almost anything else. Here’s roughly how I’d map out a sunset ceremony:
- Drive time: Plan your departure from your Airbnb or home base with enough buffer to account for the winding mountain roads. Remember to give yourself more time than your GPS estimates, especially if you’re not used to driving those roads.
- The hike up: From the Carver’s Gap trailhead, it’s about 15–20 minutes to the top if you go straight up at a leisurely pace. If you want to stop for photos along the way (highly recommended, especially during bloom season), budget closer to 45 minutes. I’d rather us have extra time than not enough.
- Summit time: I like to give couples 1–1.5 hours at the top. There’s a lot of space to roam, multiple spots for portraits, and enough room to spread the ceremony, portraits, and a quiet moment together across that window without feeling rushed.
- Outfit changes: If you want to hike up in comfortable clothes and change into your wedding attire at the summit, I bring a pop-up changing tent for exactly that.
- The walk down: If you’re timing your ceremony for sunset like Cara and Michael did, you will be walking down in the dark. Headlamps or flashlights aren’t optional, they’re essential! We can also plan to hike back down around 15 minutes before the sunset.

A Note on Leave No Trace
Roan Mountain is a genuinely special piece of land, and part of what makes it feel so untouched is that visitors treat it that way. Whatever you bring up with you whether it be champagne bottles, flower petals, decor – bring back down with you. Stay on the trail, keep your group small, and be mindful of the other hikers and couples who love this place as much as you do, leave the nature be (no altering it, no carving the trees or setting up rocks in the rivers). It costs nothing and it’s the best way to make sure this spot stays beautiful for the next couple who wants to say their vows there.

Thinking About Eloping at Roan Mountain?
If a small, intimate ceremony surrounded by mountains sounds like your kind of wedding day, I’d love to talk through what that could look like for you, rain or shine. Reach out to me here! The best part? They do not require permitting if it’s just a simple ceremony like this one!
